Conceived as a contemporary expression of Saudi earthen architecture, the Earthen Modular Pavilion transforms a single engineered clay system into a scalable civic structure shaped by mass, rhythm, shadow and sensory memory.

Locally sourced clay is stabilized for long-term outdoor use and infused with extracts inspired by Saudi flora, allowing material, scent and touch to become part of the architectural experience. Three complementary module type; structural, perforated and planted , share one dimensional logic, enabling them to aggregate into walls, thresholds, seating and sheltered enclosures, from a compact 3 m² intervention to a larger civic pavilion.

Rather than relying on mechanical systems, the pavilion draws on the inherent environmental qualities of earth. Thermal mass, filtered openings, cross-ventilation and planted cavities moderate heat and create pockets of shade and stillness. Integrated seating and a sculpted clay water vessel reinterpret gestures of Saudi hospitality through architecture rather than ornament.

The system was developed to retain a singular architectural identity while adapting to fundamentally different settings. Tested within a ROSHN neighbourhood, a Saudi heritage context and an international civic plaza, its configuration, density and orientation respond to place while its materiality, proportions and monumental silhouette remain constant.

Modular, relocatable and materially grounded, the pavilion proposes a form of contemporary Saudi placemaking that is culturally rooted without being literal, experimental yet buildable, and designed to feel permanent even when assembled as a system.
